    The goalIntroduction to the basic concepts of the structure and reactions of organic compounds, the nomenclature of organic compounds, dependence of the physical and chemical properties and molecular structure, the possibilities of synthesis of organic molecules and their application.
    The outcomeStudents will acquire basic theoretical knowledge of organic chemistry and together with the gained practical knowledge of techniques and operations in organic chemistry laboratory it will allow them to solve the problems of the synthesis and reactivity of organic molecules.
    Contents
    Contents of lecturesOrganic compounds and chemical bonds. A classification of organic compounds: functional groups. Alkanes and cycloalkanes: properties and conformation analysis. Radical halogenation (chain mechanism) and reactivity. Stereochemistry: constitutional isomers and stereoisomers. Chiral molecules (R,S–system). Optical activity. Haloalkanes: properties and synthesis. Bimolecular and monomolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN1 and SN2 reaction). Elimination reactions (E1 and E2). Stereochemistry of reactions. Alkenes and alkynes: properties and synthesis. Electrophilic and radical addition. Dimerization, oligomerization and polymerization of alkenes. Reactivity of alkenyl halides. Conjugated dienes. Electrophilic addition to conjugated dienes. Polymerization of conjugated dienes. Aromatic compounds: benzene and aromaticity. Huckel's rule of aromaticity. Synthesis of benzene derivatives: electrophilic aromatic substitution. Reactivity and regioselectivity. Organometallic compounds: synthesis, properties and application in the synthesis. Alcohols and ethers: properties and synthesis. Sulfur analogues of alcohols and ethers. Phenols and aryl halides. Nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Chemical properties of phenol.
    Contents of exercisesExperimental techniques in organic chemistry laboratory. Basic methods of separation and purification of organic substances. Synthesis of 2-3 organic compounds.
