The goalStudents should study principles, specificties and application of different tecniques which are used for quality control and quality assesment of materials and processes in chemical industry.
The outcomeStudents will master skills, knowledge and acquire experience on analytical techniques that will be selected and applied effectively in the analysis and quality control of materials and processes in engineering practice. Based on a comprehensive review of principles and applicability techniques, students will select and apply the appropriate technique for analyzing elements and compounds in different samples (depending on sensitivity, aggregate state, sample size, degree of purity).
    Contents
Contents of lecturesIntroduction. Basic principles of chemical analysis and analytical techniques. Review and classification of analytical methods and techniques; basic procedures within analytical techniques for separating and determining the substance from the complex matrix of the sample. Methodological approach and quality control concept. Statistical processing and interpretation of results. ; Sampling preparation: sampling (solid, liquid and gas samples), stabilization and archiving of samples; decomposition, concentration, purification of samples, sample pre-treatment (pre-concentration). Chemical methods and analytical techniques for proving and determining elements, ions and compounds (Classical semi-micro and micro techniques, tests, spot-analyzes, gravimetric, volumetric). Review of modern instrumental methodsand application for quality control and monitoring in the chemical industry. Method selection. Criteria for selecting methods. Assessment, design and applicability of chemical analysis methods. Sensitivity, selectivity and determination limits. Electrochemical methods and techniques. Thermal methods and techniques. Optical methods and techniques. Separation methods and techniques. Buying analytical techniques. Process techniques and process dynamic analysis. Radiochemical techniques, surface analysis, chemical sensors. On-line techniques.
Contents of exercisesExamination of the composition of different samples (qualitative). Measurement of control parameters for sample quality monitoring (pH, conductivity, oxygen content). Examination of the quality of water of different origin (alkaline, bottled, waste, process): classical volumetric (p and m alkalinity, color, hardness, chloride content), instrumental (potentiometry, ion selective electrodes, AAS, IC), pH determination, and anion, conductivity, heavy metals and other parameters that represent quality indicators. Analysis of the quality of specific materials in the chemical industry: acids, bases, salts, water, gases, alloys, ores, ceramics, composite materials, glass, catalysts, polymers, food, drugs; by appropriate techniques.
