The goalPhysical Chemistry II course aims to provide the knowledge on processes occurring at the phase boundaries; to improve the understanding of the formal chemical kinetics through study of the complex reactions and their molecular background, and to provide the basic knowledge for understanding of electrochemical reactions as unique class of heterogeneous chemical reactions.
The outcomeStudent would be able to understand properties of the phase boundaries and acquired knowledge on different colloid system which would enable them to have the bases for understanding of specific and practical technologies lately discussed in practical undergraduate and graduate courses. They would have understood the models of complex chemical reactions and the influence of various parameters on the reaction rate and adopted basic principles underlying catalytic processes. They would be able to distinguish between chemical and electrochemical reactions and to adopt basis for understanding of electrochemical reactions in equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions.
Contents of lectures• Properties of the surfaces (surface tension, surface active substances, surface films, adsorption at solid surfaces, electrical properties of the phase boundaries, colloid systems-classification, stability, sols, associative colloids, macromolecular colloids, emulsions, micro-emulsions, properties of colloidal systems: kinetic, optical, electrical and rheological, electro kinetic phenomena) • Electrochemistry (ions in the solution, electrochemical half-reaction, equilibrium electrochemistry-Nernst eq., classification of electrodes, electrochemical systems, biochemical standard state, electrochemical reactions under non equilibrium conditions. • Chemical kinetics (kinetics of the complex chemical reactions-parallel, consecutive, chain reactions, transition state theory, catalysis)
Contents of exercises• Gibbs adsorption isotherm • Electro-kinetic potential or colloid particles • Determination of tixotropy by rotational viscometry • Standard electrode potentials and potentiometric titration • Specific and general acid-base catalysis
