The goalIntroduction to basic microbial activities relevant to the monitoring and pollution prevention and remediation processes of water, soil and air. Introduction to the regulatory requirements and standards in the field of environmental protection.
The outcomeConnecting acquired knowledge with aspects of current technologies used in environmental protection. Identifying and managing environmental aspects of business organization in the field of biotechnology and food industries
      Contents
Contents of lectures1 Ecology and environmental terms. Environmental pollution and their sources (classification of pollutants, pollution control strategy). 2 The application of biological systems to protect the environment (relations between the microbial growth kinetics of microbial growth on the two substrates, biotechnological procedures to protect water, soil and air). 3 Pollution control of aquatic ecosystems (aquatic ecosystem pollution parameters - general, chemical, biological tests to determine the toxicity and biodegradability). 4 Microbiological aspects in the treatment of drinking water and distribution systems (basic process steps, disinfection, control of biofilm growth) 5 Fundamentals of biological wastewater treatment - wastewater characterization, the basic unit of waste water process, kinetics of microbial growth. 6 Aerobic treatment - activated sludge process, aerobic lagoons, biological filtration. 7 Anaerobic treatment processes - methan production 8 Composting 9 Bioremediation and phytoremediation of land 10 Utilization of organic waste by biotechnological processes
Contents of exercisesComputational exercises. Fundamentals of Environmental Management - ISO 14000 standards and legislation. Environmental aspects in biotechnology and food industries - Methodology for identifying and evaluating the environmental aspects, control of operations, monitoring and measuring the impact on the environment, improvement of environmental management systems. Tour of the company with the system for wastewater treatment.
