The goalIntroducing the definitions and experimental methods of determining the rheological parameters of polymer materials, as well as empirical equations, mathematical modeling and molecular theories that describe the viscoelastic behavior of polymers. Students gain insight into the requirements in performing the experiments and processing results of rheological measurements.
The outcomeSubject Rheology of Polymers deals with the study of flow and deformation of materials by the action of a force. Knowledge is acquired which provides insight into the structure of the material and allows investigation the effect of the rheological properties on the method of processing and the application of low molecular and polymeric materials.
    Contents
Contents of lectures1. The definition of rheology as a science. Basic rheological parameters. Dynamic and non-periodic experiments. Experimental techniques for rheological measurements. 2. Viscoelasticity of polymers. 3. Viscoelastic models. Mechanical components and models. The distribution of relaxation and retardation times. The molecular theory of viscoelastic behavior. 4. Effect of temperature and time on the rheological behavior of polymers. The dependence of the rheological behavior of polymers on their molecular structure. 5. Viscosity of polymer melts. Concentrated solutions of polymers and gels. 6. Flow of disperse systems. Thixotropy and rheopexy of suspension.
Contents of exercisesExperimental exercise: It is envisaged that the student performs five experimental exercises: Determination of the viscosity of concentrated solutions and disperse systems. Determination of the viscosity of polymer melts by capillary viscometer and dynamical mechanical analysis. Determination of phase transitions and physical properties of crystalline and amorphous polymers by dynamic mechanical analysis. Analysis of stress-strain behavior of elastomers and thermoplastic polymers in tensile testings.
