    The goalTo introduce students to important aspects of chemistry of macromolecules from molecular structure, method of synthesis to the properties and application of polymers. Acquisition of basic knowledge about the mechanism and kinetics of chain and stepgrowth polymerization. To master the basic techniques of polymerization reactions. To understand the influence of molecular structure on the properties and application of polymeric materials.
    The outcome1. Students acquire basic knowledge about the mechanism and kinetics of chain and stepgrowth polymerization. 2. Students are able to interpret the choice of monomers, manner and conditions in which synthesis can affect the structure of macromolecules. 3. Students have mastered the knowledge of the dependence of the macroscopic properties of macromolecules on their molecular structure. ;
    Contents
    Contents of lecturesBasic concepts, definitions and nomenclature. Classification of polymers. The structure of the polymer. Stepgrowth polymerization. The mechanism and kinetics of stepgrowth polymerization. Polymerization as a chain reaction. Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of chain polymerization. The radical polymerization. The mechanism and kinetics of elementary reactions of polymerization. Ionic polymerization and stereospecific polymerization. Techniques of free radical polymerization: bulk polymerization, emulsion, suspension, solution and precipitation polymerization.
    Contents of exercisesNumerical problems: Molecular size - Molecular weight averages and molecular weight distribution. Polycondensation of bifunctional monomers. Theory of gel formation. Free radical polymerization. Anionic and cationic polymerization. Laboratory practice: It is envisaged that the student does seven exercises: Synthesis of polymer by interfacial polycondensation. High-temperature synthesis of polyesters by polycondensation. Preparation of rigid and flexible polyurethane foams. Polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the bulk. Polymerization of styrene in emulsion. Polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the suspension. Precipitation polymerization of acrylonitrile. Synthesis of polyethers and polyesters by ring-opening of heterocyclic monomers.
