    The goalTo gain the knowledge about identification of microorganisms using genetic information and molecular techniques.
    The outcomeTheoretical knowledge about the molecular basis for the systematics of organism, particularly those base don the sequence of the 16/18 S rRNA gene, and use of this sequence in the rapid identification of organisms. Theoretical and practical knowledge about molecular techniques that can be used for the analysis of complex microbial ecosystems that can be found in food, water and other biological materials.

    Contents of lecturesTheoretical knowledge about sysetematics of organisms based on the DNA sequence, and the use of molecular techniques for the analysis of (complex) microbial ecosystems. The main focus of the subject is understanding principles and interpretation of results obtained with the following molecular techniques: isolation of nucleic acids, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), ligation detection reaction (LDR), hybridization of DNA molecules with oligonucleotide probes both on the level of cells, or on the DNA array platforms, molecular techniques for profiling such as denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The subject will give basis for bioinformatics analysis that include searches in the public databases, analysis and identification of organisms based on the DNA sequence.
    Contents of exercisesPractical part of the subject will include laboratory projects, where students will apply some of the molecular techniques that will be applied for the diagnostics of model ecosystems. Bioinformatics exercises will include analysis of the 16S or 18S rRNA sequence using software such as ClustalX and ARB and searches of the public databases.
