The goalTo provide an understanding of the implications of the production, resource management and environmental impact of solid waste management. components of solid waste management infrastructure systems to minimise the above effects; be aware of the significance of recycling, reuse and reclamation of solid wastes; be familiar with relationships between inappropriate waste management practices and impacts on water, soil and sediment quality; fully appreciate the current practices available and implement the systems available in solid waste management; be able to integrate technical solid waste management options and imposed environmental legislation and guidance to develop legal and safe solutions.
The outcomeUnderstand solid waste management with respect to its history, physical properties, and associated considerations in the technical and economic evaluation of emerging technologies. Outline processes for solid waste incineration, composting, including the fundamental technology required to ensure operational effectiveness wirthin acceptable environmental parameters.
    Contents
Contents of lecturesDesription of waste; different types of waste; classificatioon of waste; amounts and composition of waste; causes of the waste problems and strategies to minimize these problems; waste hierarchy; waste treatment and handling; thermal and biological methods, landfilling.
Contents of exercisesCharacterization of waste from various sources, determination of waste propoerties, compost analysis, sampling and analysis of ash generated by waste combustion facilities, testing solid waste and leachate to determine landfill stability and sandfill biodegradation enhancement
