The goalThis course is continuation of the course Introduction in design. The aim is to extend the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for design of devices and apparatus in pharmaceutical industry.
The outcomeThrough the planned syllabus, computational exercises and project assignment, students gain knowledge about dimensioning and detailed design of devices and apparatus which are working under conditions of high or low temperature, overpressure or vacuum in pharmaceutical plants. Students will be able to apply this knowledge in engineering practice, through the analysis of the design phases.
    Contents
Contents of lecturesDefinition of apparatus in the process industry. Basic design principles of equipment structure: influence of technological requirements, design and possibilities for production and assembly, customization of structure in order to meet the requirements in pharmaceutical industry (GMP, FDA, national standards and regulations). Typical and dedicated equipment in pharmaceutical industry. Pressurized equipment – overview of categories according to European PED. The influence of location factors and assembly. Safety factor. ; Determination of volume and geometric measures of apparatus. The requirements which have to be fulfilled in design of devices and apparatus according to SRPS EN standards. Thin-walled and thick-walled equipment structure. Stress state of thin-walled apparatus. Definition of number and positions of openings on the apparatus (nozzles, opening for stirrer, inspection openings). Sealing problems in apparatus working in sterile production conditions. Devices for solid dosage forms production in pharmaceutical industry. Characteristics of fluid transport through pipelines in pharmaceutical industry. Basics of pneumatic transport design for solid forms (powders and granules).
Contents of exercisesComputational exercises include examples of design of apparatus structures in pharmaceutical industry: ; 1. Dimensioning of jacketed pressure vessel - bioreactor, ; 2. Design of mechanical stirrer and sealing of the stirrer shaft, ; 3. Dimensioning of storage tank, and ; 4. Dimensioning of pipeline and the auxiliary equipment.
