The goalFamiliarizing students with definitions of rheological parameters of polymeric materials as well as with experimental methods used for their determination. Acquiring basic knowledge of empirical equations, mathematical models and molecular theories, which could describe the viscoelastic behavior of polymeric materials. Providing the opportunity to evaluate test techniques and data analysis methods for the rheological measurements.
The outcomeAfter successful completion of the course students: (i) possess a knowledge that give insight into the structure of the material and allow to investigate the effect of the rheological properties on the method of processing and application of polymers, (ii) mastered the techniques of experimental characterization of the rheological properties of polymeric materials, (iii) acquire appropriate level of knowledge to formulate clear tasks and present the results of rheological measurements .
    Contents
Contents of lecturesRheology of Polymers deals with the study of flow and deformation of polymer materials by the action of external forces. Viscoelasticity of polymers. Viscoelastic models. Mechanical components and models. Distribution of relaxation and retardacionih time. Effect of temperature and time on the rheological behavior of polymers. The dependence of the rheological behavior of the indicators of the molecular structure of polymers. Viscosity of polymer melts. Concentrated solutions of polymers and gels. Flow of disperse systems. Knowledge is acquired which provide insight into the structure of the material and allow to investigate the effect of the rheological properties on the method of processing and the ultimate application of polymeric materials.
Contents of exercisesIn the research study, it is intended that the student carry out a literature review, develop and provide two rheological experiments, analyse the results, and then to present them. It is anticipated that the student chooses two rheological experiments: Determination of the viscosity of concentrated solutions of polymers and dispersed systems. Determination of dynamic viscosity of polymer melts by mechanical analysis. Determination of the rheological behavior of polymer hydrogels. Determination of phase transitions and physical properties of crystalline and amorphous polymers by dynamic mechanical analysis.
