    The goalThe aim of the present course is to give an overview of different types of Al alloys: properties, microstructure, thermomechanical processing routes, strengthening and softening mechanisms, corrosion behavior and its wide range application.
    The outcomeAt the end of this course the student should be able to understand the relationship between processing route, microstructure and properties; also, to choose the Al alloy for specific application and to define parameters of thermomechanical treatment in order to achieve good combination of structure/properties for an appropriate application.
    Contents of lecturesProduction and Processing of Al alloys (Bayer and Hall-Herault processes, DC casting, recycling, rolling, extrusion and forming processes). Classification of the Al alloys. Cast Al alloys. Wrought Al alloys. Designation of cast and wrought alloys. Designation of tempers. Major alloy systems. Chemical composition, thermomechanical treatment and properties of: i) Heat treatable (2xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx series) and ii) Non-heat treatable alloys (1xxx, 3xxx, 5xxx series). Strengthening mechanisms: i) solid solution hardening, ii) grain size strengthening, iii) precipitation hardening and iv) strain hardening. Recovery and recrystallization. Microstructure, properties and application od cast Al alloys. Corrosion behavior of Al alloys. Al alloys for structural application, transport, shipbuilding, packaging industry, etc. Automotive, aircraft and Al alloys foil products. Alloy and Temper selection for different application.
    Contents of exercises1. Solid solution hardening effect 2. Grain size strengthening 3. Precipitation hardening 4. Numerical analysis of the hardening effects (Kocks-Mecking, Voce).
