The goalThe aim of the course is that students expand their knowledge in the basic engineering disciplines such as technological processes and instrumental methods of chemical analysis and to link these two disciplines and apply them in the analysis, control and monitoring of chemical processes. Students need to study the principles, characteristics and advantages of various chemical methods and techniques for evaluation the quality of processes in chemical industry.
The outcomeStudents will be trained to select and apply modern methods of chemical analysis for on-line control of technological processes (the quality of materials and monitoring of parameters essential for process control).
      Contents
Contents of lecturesI. INTRODUCTION. The concept of automated analytical systems for measurement of input parameters, the installation of on-line meters in the line of technological processes, transport of the sample in a flow system, central control and the measurement of output parameters. Review of modern analytical methods and techniques of chemical measurements, control and monitoring of process in a chemical industry. Review apparatus, instruments, meters and sensor… II. CHEMICAL METHODS FOR THE PROCESS CONTROL AND MONITORING. Overview of modern instrumental methods and their applications for process control and monitoring in the chemical industry. On-line techniques: Continuous flow analysis (CFA), flow injection analysis (FIA) and dynamic process analysis. On-line instruments, apparatus, analyzers, sensors (pH meters, ion-selective electrodes, oxygen meters, conductivity meters, CNS analyzers, TOC). Review of main characteristics: high accuracy at low concentrations, short response time, alarm (loss of sample, reagent loss, exceeding the scope of compensation, loss of power, the housing temperature)... On-line optical apparatus: refractometers, photometers. Chemical sensors: optical, semiconductor, gas, piezoelectric. Combined, coupled techniques and other techniques. III. THE APPLICATION. The application of chemical methods to control and process monitoring: Monitoring of technological processes in the chemical industry (production process of drinking water systems, wastewater …
Contents of exercisesMeasurement of control parameters for water quality monitoring using some portable apparatus (pH, conductivity, oxygen content). Introducing students with the work of one of the thermal power plants and a chemical treatment of water. Monitoring of a process for purification of water by applying sensors and on-line analyzers for measuring pH, conductivity, content of sodium, chloride and silica. Work in a SPSS statistical program for processing data on a computer.
