The goalThe course provides an understanding of surfactants, specific molecular structure of surfactants, properties and behavior in aqueous solutions and organic solvents. Acquiring knowledge of manufacturing processes and applications of surfactants in industry. Polymeric surfactants; advantages of polymeric surfactants compared to small molecules, traditional surfactants. Understanding of adsorption phenomena at the L/G, L/L and L/S interfaces relevant to the application of surfactants in stabilization of emulsions and foams, wetting agents, solubilizers, detergents and softeners.
The outcomeAfter the students fulfilled all the requirements and passed the exam, they are acquired knowledge on surfactants and their properties, understand the basic phenomena involved in any application. The students are capable to choose the right surfactant for specific application.
    Contents
Contents of lectures1. Surfactants: structure, properties and classification. 2. Association of surfactants, micellization, surfactants in water and organic solvents. 3. Surfactants-polymer interaction; polymeric surfactants. 4. Adsorption of surfactants and polymeric surfactants at the L/G, L/L and L/S interfaces. 5. Role of surfactants in wetting, washing and solubilization. 6. Application of surfactants in formulation and stabilization of emulsions, foams, micro- and nano emulsions. 7. Surfactants as dispersants and stabilisation of suspensions. 8. Role of surfactants in controlled release devices. 9. Surfactants in personal care and cosmetics. 10. Surfactants in pharmaceutical formulations. 11. Application of surfactants in agrochemicals. 12. Surfactants in the food industry.
Contents of exercisesIn the research study, it is intended that the student carry out a literature review and provide seminar and presentation about surfactants. The topic of the seminar is related to the student's Ph.D. thesis.
