The goalBasic knowledge on the structure, properties and processing of thermoplastic polymer materials. Basic knowledge for the correct selection of thermoplastic polymer materials for appropriate applications.
The outcomeStudents are able to predict and evaluate the properties of thermoplastic polymer materials. Students develop the capability to approach problem solving in a comptetent and organized fashion. Students acquire knowledge that enables them to work in industrial practice.
Contents of lectures1. Introduction. Significance and volume of the application of thermoplastics at the global and domestic level. 2. Analysis of the properties of thermoplastic polymers relevant for their application and processing. 3. Polyolefins (polyethylene, polypropylene). 4. Vinyl polymers (poly(vinyl chloride), polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate)). 5. Linear polycondensation polymers (polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonate). 6. Thermoplastic elastomers. 7. Auxiliary raw materials for thermoplastic polymers (additives, plasticizers, fillers). 8. Basics of processing thermoplastic polymer materials. Calandering. Lamination. Extrusion. Polymer film production. Thermoforming. Rotoforming. Compression moulding. Injection moulding. Blow moulding. 9. Expanded thermoplastic polymer materials. 10. Processing and production of multicomponent thermoplastic polymer materials.
Contents of exercises1. Identification of thermoplastic polymer materials. 2. Composition of recipes and dosage of auxiliary raw materials. 3. Calculation of the technological parameters of equipment for processing thermoplastic materials.
