The goalComprehension of general and specific demands concerning separation of biotechnological products is prerequisite for selection and optimization . During this course students learn properties of biological compounds important for their separation, criteria for method selection, fundamental background of each method, applied equipment, and fields of application.
The outcomeDuring this course students will gain knowledge of basic principles and techniques for separation of biotechnology products. After course students will be enabled to choose adequate separation procedure based on knowing characteristic properties of biological products. Practical lessons will provide students opportunity to calculate the efficiency of isolation of particular biological compounds.
    Contents
Contents of lecturesGeneral demands in separation technology and specific demands of biological compounds separation. Classification of biological compounds and specific properties important for their separation. Cell disruption methods and selection criteria. Kinetics of intracellular compounds release. Coagulation, centrifugation, flotation, and filtration in bioseparation (theoretical background, equipment, application). Crystallization and extraction in bioseparation (theoretical background, equipment, application). Bioseparation in aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS). Membrane separation of biological compounds. Chromatography in bioseparations (liquid chromatography, gradient elution chromatography, gel permeation chromatography, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, reversed phase chromatography, affinity chromatography).
