The goal | The objective of this course is to analyze the coating production from an idea to industrial manufacturing with all parameters that are necessary for successful manufacturing and monitoring of processes, as well as final products. The students are acquired with the role of all components in a coating formulation. Selection of raw materials and how they affect coatings manufacturing and properties, will be discussed, as well as surface preparation techniques and coatings application techniques. Students are gained with intelligent and eco-friendly coatings. They are gained with the most common defects during storage and application of the coatings. | |||
The outcome | The student can: specify the basic raw materials for coatings and important representatives, describe their function in coatings and the fields of application, describe the coating systems, their properties, and the fields of application, describe the basic parameters of formulation, and film-forming of the coating systems. Describe the process stages in the manufacture of coatings. | |||

Contents of lectures | 1. Coatings-purpose and function. Classification. 2. Coating formulation, the role of the components: resins, solvents, pigments, additives, fillers. Principles of the coating formulation. 3. Coating manufacturing. Water-borne coatings. Liquid and powder coatings. 4. Coating properties. testing of coatings. 5. Surface preparation techniques, application, and drying methods. 6.Classification of coatings concerning the type of resin. Alkyd resins. Polyesters. Epoxy resins. Polyurethanes. Amino resins. Acrylic resins. 7. Water-borne resins. 8. Intelligent and eco-friendly resins. 9. Defects in coatings. 10. Glossary of coatings terms. | |||
Contents of exercises | 1.Coatings formulations including examples of trade sales, industrial, and specialty coatings. 2. Selection of raw materials; coatings formulation, prediction of the manufacturing process and monitoring, testing of final products. 3. Testing of commercial coatings - coating drying time, viscosity, chemical resistance, hydrophobicity of the coating. 4. Examples from the industry. | |||
