The goalThe goal of the subject is to introduce students to the building materials technology based on clays, production technology of mortar, to emphasize the influence of process parameters on properties of obtained building materials and to introduce students to characterization, quality control and environmental protection in building materials industry.
The outcomeStudents learn about basic principles, types of chemical processes and appliances in technology of building materials. They are introduced to specific technologies from the field of various building materials, to their properties and applications.
      Contents
Contents of lecturesCourse introduces students to fundamental physical and chemical processes and technology of obtaining building materials based on clays as well as mortars: gypsum, lime and certain types of cement, their characterization, quality control and environmental protection during the production. Special attention is paid on high–temperature processes taking place in obtaining these materials as well as the influence of process parameters to the structure and properties of building materials.
Contents of exercisesExperimental work: DTA of gypsum, determination of granulometric composition, analysis of cement, raw mix preparation and batch calculations for Portland cement, determination of CO2 content, estimation of specific surface area, hot-stage microscopy investigation of cement, X-ray analysis of cement, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy Analysis of building ceramics.
