The goalThe aim of the course is for students to adopt the basic principles between the structure, properties and processing of composite materials and to become familiar with and master the standard methods of characterization of composite materials.
The outcomeStudents will be able, based on the acquired knowledge, to select the most appropriate and valid methods for specific composite engineering materials. In this way, they will be able to perform an evaluation of the interaction of process parameters and achieved physical-mechanical properties of the material within the design of composite materials processing.
      Contents
Contents of lecturesIntroduction to the characterization of composite materials from the point of view of structure-property-processing; surface characterization of matrix-reinforcement: adhesion and bond types; physicochemical methods of matrix-reinforcement surface characterization; Micromechanical properties of matrix-reinforcement surfaces; interlaminar composite characteristics; the influence of matrix-reinforcement surface treatment and modification on the mechanical properties of the composite; Elastic and viscoelastic properties; Thermal characterization methods for composites (DSC, TGA, DTA, TMA); Residual stresses in composite materials; development and effects of residual stresses on the composite properties;; Toughness and toughness testing; Creep and creep testing; Fracture of composites, fractography of fracture surface; Friction, abrasion and wear testing of composites.
Contents of exercisesLectures will be followed by calculus case studies. Also, the home work is planned for completing theoretical part. Introduction in methods of characterization DSC, TGA, DMA and TMA; mechanical testing of composite materials.
