      The goalThe aim of the course is to introduce to the students a relatively new field of ceramic materials that are used in medicine and dentistry. By the curriculum of this course, it is planned for students to master the techniques of synthesis and also to gain insight into the structure, properties and application of new bioceramic materials. Writing the essay aims to introduce to the students the latest scientific achievements in the field by literature analysis and scientific papers.
      The outcomeThe course introduces to the students the basic methods of synthesis, properties and applications of bioceramic materials as well as the compounds for their synthesis. During the course, students will do experimental exercises in synthesis, characterization and in vitro testing of these materials.

      Contents of lecturesStructure and properties of bioceramic materials, Application of bioceramic materials, Bone-natural ceramic composite material, Division of bioceramic material according to the composition and the reaction of the organism, Bioactive, bioinert and bioresorption ceramic materials, Porous and non-porous bioactive ceramics, Bioactive ceramic coatings, Cementitious materials, Dental ceramic materials, Process principles of biomineralization, Synthesis of bioceramic materials.
      Contents of exercisesSynthesis of bio-ceramic powders and sintering of porous and dense bio-ceramic forms, Characterization of porous and non-porous materials using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion spectroscopy, Electrophoretic deposition of bioactive glass and HAP on titanium based substrates, Calcination of calcium hydroxyapatite powders and transformation to tricalcium-phosphates, In vitro testing of materials in simulated body fluid.
