The goalThe aim of the course is to familiarize students with science and engineering adhesives and sealants that are used in various industries and in medicine and dentistry. They will be introduced to the most important natural, synthetic and biological adhesives, method of synthesis, characterization and the most important applications.
The outcomeStudents acquire knowledge of the basic principles of adhesion-theories of adhesion and adhesion mechanisms, as well as of the structure, properties and methods of synthesis. Manufacturing technology of adhesives and sealants: materials, processes, and equipment. Based on this knowledge they are able to make effective selection of adhesives and sealants for the desired application, and to select and apply procedures to obtain optimal adhesives and sealants.
      Contents
Contents of lecturesIntroduction to adhesive technology. Theories of adhesion. Adhesive forces. Wetting. Work of adhesion. Surface treatments. Adhesion promoters. Adhesives and sealants-classification. The most important adhesives and sealants-cyanoacrylates, silicones and epoxy resins. Selection. Testing of adhesive properties. Physical and thermal properties. Strength test. Fracture test. Special tests. Durability of adhesive bonding. Low and high temperature effects. Effect of moisture, water and chemicals. Contents of exercisesDemonstration exercises on synthesis and characterization of materials using modern methods. Solving tasks that give insight into the synthesis, properties and characterization of polymeric adhesives, in order to gain complete knowledge of the adhesive application in the fields of construction and electrical engineering, as well as medicine. The purpose of the seminar paper is to enable students to become acquainted with the latest achievements by analyzing literature and scientific papers in order to gain a fuller understanding of this field. Solving problem and tasks related to the calculation of adhesive bonding and selection of optimal adhesive materials.
