The goalThe aim of the course is to teach the students general chemical engineering principles and methods. These include graphical representation of processes and formulating and solving mass and energy balances for one and several process units containing single and multiple phase systems. The students are taught to use techniques for problem solving and are introduced to many chemical engineering terms, which will be studied in detail later in the frame of the study program. In addition, within the laboratory exercises, students learn to work in teams as well as to analyze and present their results verbally and in writing.
The outcome1. Students have learnt how to create process flowchart for one and several process units. 2. Students have learnt to formulate and solve mass and energy balances for single and multiple-phase systems with or without chemical reaction under steady-state conditions as well as for simple cases of unsteady processes. 3. Students acquired a basis for further advancements in analyses of complex systems, which are being taught within courses later in the study program. 4. Students have gained communication and social competences required for work in a team of engineers and communication skills for clear formulation and presentation of the problem, solving methods used and results obtained.
      Contents
Contents of lecturesThe course introduces to students the basic principles of chemical engineering starting from the role of chemical engineers in industry and general problems that they encounter in practice, followed by the presentation of principal approaches and tools in chemical engineering analysis and problem solving. The course program includes elements of process flowchart formulation, mass and energy balances, transport phenomena, separation processes, and chemical reactor engineering applied to simple problems that students learn how to solve. Course topics: Chemical engineering and the role of chemical engineers in chemical process industry; Processes, process components and parameters; Introduction to transport phenomena: diffusion and convection; Mass balances: general strategy and application to single process units; Mass balances on processes with chemical reactions; Processes with multiple units; Multiphase systems: mass balances of components; Mass balances for non-steady-state processes; Energy balances: general strategy and applications to systems without chemical reactions; Energy balances for processes with chemical reactions; Strategy for formulations of energy balances for non-steady-state processes.
Contents of exercisesPractical lessons include problem solving sessions related to corresponding course topics and four laboratory demonstrations: 1. Measurement of process variables: temperature, pressure, flowrate, and concentration; 2. Reynolds’ experiment; 3. Determination of conversion in a continuous stirred tank reactor; 4. Energy balance for a tubular heat exchanger. Students work in teams but create individual reports.
