The goalThis is an introductory course that covers basic concepts necessary for theoretical and practical understanding of electron microscopy techniques. The course covers electron diffraction, image formation - diffraction contrast (TEM), phase contrast (HRTEM), basics of STEM as well as microanalysis (EDS and EELS).
The outcomeIt is expected that the students will develop a base for understanding and interpretation of experimental results acquired by electron microscopy techniques.
      Contents
Contents of lecturesElectron optics. Electron diffraction: Bragg law, reciprocal lattice, Ewald sphere, Indexing diffraction patterns. Kinematic theory: diffraction contrast, two beam approximation, BF and DF, extinction distance, limitations. Dynamic theory. Phase contrast and HRTEM: resolution and limiting factors; simulation and interpretation of results. STEM: рeciprocity, BF/DF/annular dark field , electron probe, high resolution. EDS: X-rays; collection and processing X-ray signal; аpplication - analysis and mapping; EELS: fundaments – inelastic scattering EELS spectra: edges и quantification; Energy filtered TEM (EFTEM): chemical mapping.
