    The goalThe objective of the course is to get the students familiar with the basic design solutions, working principles, selection methods and exploitation of equipment in biotechnology.
    The outcomeThrough the planned syllabus, calculation examples and project assignment, students gain adequate knowledge about equipment in biotechnology and its exploitation. Students will be able to apply this knowledge in engineering practice.
    Contents
    Contents of lecturesClassification of equipment in biotechnology. Basic principles of equipment selection. Current technical regulative. Pressurized equipment. Selection of structural materials for equipment in biotechnology. Types of corrosion-resistant materials; examples of application of stainless steel, alloy non-ferrous metals, non-metallic materials, composite materials and their joints. The risk of product contamination under the influence of structural material. Classification and basic design solutions of bioreactors. Selection of appropriate design depending on the defined process. Different solutions of mechanical stirring in vessels. Types of stirrers, basic dimensions and drive systems. Equipment for thermal, mechanical and chemical sterilization. Sterilization procedure for production area, process air and culture medium. Overview of equipment for grinding. Design solutions and working principles of equipment for separation. Equipment for homogenization. Overview of structural solutions for drying equipment in biotechnology. Pipelines and pipeline equipment in biotechnology plants. Equipment for biotechnological processes in the energy sector. Construction solutions and working principle of the digestors and auxiliary equipment for storage and distribution. Construction, operating principles and selection of measurement, regulation and safety elements. Connecting separate entities and assembly of the technological lines in biotechnology production.Examples of constructed plants.
    Contents of exercisesAnalysis of the implemented solutions of equipment in biotechnology. Dimensioning and basic calculations of bioreactor - jacketed pressure vessel. Example of storage tank design in the biotechnology plant. DImensioning of the vacuum homogenizer with mechanical stirring. Examples of sterilizer selection for thermal sterilization. Dimensioning and calculation of pipelines.

    Methods of teachingLectures in the classroom (using computer and video beam, overhead projector and blackboard). Computational exercises from the practical part solved using licensed MS Office and CAD software packages on PCs. Preparation of students for practical examples completion in small groups.
