| The goal | The goal of this course is to provide an understanding of the driving force for phase transformations. Students attain knowledge about the transformation-induced microstructural changes and transformation kinetics altering the material properties. | |||
| The outcome | Students will be able to understand mechanism and kinetics of phase transformaations, as fundamental knowledge needed for design of heat treatment technologies. | |||
| Contents | ||||
| Contents of lectures | Consider the driving force for phase transformations in solids, mechanisms of diffusional transformations involving short-range or long-range diffusion and diffusionless transformations, role of various structural parameters, kinetics of phase transformations, diagrams of isothermal transformation or time-temperature-transformation (TTT) and continuous cooling transformation (CCT). | |||
| Contents of exercises | Consider the thermodynamic and crystallographic concepts of phase transformations, diffusion in metals and alloys, nucleation and growth of stable nuclei, types of interphase interfaces and shape of second-phase particles, mechanisms and phase transformations rates, generation and interpretation of TTT and CCT diagrams for various metallic materials. | |||
