The goal | The aim of the course is to teach the students specialized and novel trends and achievements in the area of bioreactor systems with immobilized cells and enzymes specifically applied in biotechnological processes, pharmacy, biomedicine, organic synthesis, environmental engineering and other fields. The goal is also to prepare the students for experimental research in this area during the laboratory studies of different biocatalyst carriers, immobilization methods and a selected bioreactor system with immobilized cells/enzyme with respect to the operating regime and the process efficiency. | |||
The outcome | 1. Students extended their knowledge and gained new insights in the current immobilized systems, which are increasingly applied in biotechnological processes, pharmacy, medicine and diagnostics. 2. Students gained skills and knowledge to critically analyze and evaluate different immobilization techniques as well as to independently develop new immobilized systems suited for the specific application. 3. Students gained competencies to independently design and carry out an experimental plan and to analyze and present the obtained results. 4. Students gained communication and social competencies required for work in a team of engineers. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The course introduces to students modern bioreactor systems with immobilized cells and enzymes, which are widely applied in different areas of biotechnology, pharmacy, biomedicine and wastewater treatment processes. The course topics include a review of types and properties of commercial immobilization carriers, theoretical principles and practical utilization of classical and novel immobilization techniques, and the analysis of the main immobilized bioreactor types regarding hydrodynamics, mass transfer properties, design parameters, and practical applications. The course also introduces to students recent trends in development of novel immobilized systems and possibilities for utilization in practice in different areas. | |||
Contents of exercises | The course includes experimental research so that the students investigate different immobilization carriers and techniques, and then set up and test a selected bioreactor system with immobilized cells/enzyme with respect to the operating regime and the process efficacy. | |||
