The goalIntroduction to biomedical polymeric materials, methods of their synthesis and characterization, and most important applications in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.
The outcomeStudents acquire knowledge in the methods of polymer synthesis, their structure, properties and possibilities of application of biomedical polymeric materials as drug delivery systems, for tissue and organ reconstruction and regeneration and in methods of designing various medical devices. Based on these skills they are capable to select optimal biomedical material and method of its processing for the desired application.
      Contents
Contents of lecturesBasic concepts about biomedical polymeric materials. Classification by origin, structure and application. Surface and bulk properties. Influence of chemical structure, molecular weight, crystallinity and mechanical properties of polymers on the field of application. Testing methods. The most important natural and synthetic polymers. Natural origin polymers in regenerative medicine. Polymers for use in dermatology, ophthalmology and dentistry. Bioactive dressings for the treatment of wounds based on gelatin, alginate and hyaluronic acid. "Intelligent" polymeric hydrogels sensitive to changes in pH, temperature and biological stimuli. Polymeric systems for controlled drug release. Medical adhesives. Biodegradable polymers for surgery and tissue regeneration. Antimicrobial polymers. Biocompatibility and biological response during application. Sterilization of medical devices.
Contents of exercisesDemonstration exercises in the synthesis and characterization of materials using modern methods (FTIR, SEM, and in vitro testing of the SBF). Solving tasks that give insight into the synthesis, properties and characterization of biomaterials. Solving tasks in the fields of biodegradable polymers, hydrogels and controlled release systems in order to gain complete knowledge of application materials in the field of pharmacy and medicine. Seminar essay in the selected area aims to introduce students to the latest developments in the field of literature and analyzing scientific papers to a more comprehensive insight at this area.
